Thank you for your kind words. Of course I'm still talking to you.. my memories of you are superior ones. You were always a warm and eloquent extrovert. You brought people together and you cared about EVERYONE. I met many people after you graduated and left the Omega house. I maintain you were still the wisest and most mature. The character of that house started to decline almost as soon as you were handed your diploma and the Omegas had no pledges after you left. I believe you are the reason most of them pledged. The warmth you offered was so strong and sincere that it still lingered in the air like an invisible peaceful aura after you were gone. People who never met you were still drawn to the house for reasons they couldn't explain. As we all know, in the 80's, many college students talked a good game about morals and atrocity of American greed and corporate disregard for humanitarian issues and how they would never be like that, etc and they would use their education and intellect to fight injustice, blah blah blah Well, most of them sold out to the great 1980's "Who can be the biggest most decadent yuppy" contest.
NOT YOU. After 24 years, you are still wonderful and living your life with purpose. Even through life's challenges that test our character (grief, loss, addiction, illness, etc) the person who has true character to begin with, as you do, will come out on top, as you have.

Anti-blog speak is predictable, simple minded and humorous.

Anything new, revolutionary and unknown will always be invalidated. My business has blogs. Blogs require technical knowledge, marketing knowledge, hours of management, adequate or better writing ability..... Not to mention the long nightmarish hours and work involved in their initial set up. We have had affiliates, after realizing the level of commitment and time required to be a blog affiliate, decide to be regular (link posting only) affiliates, stating the blog was "too hard." We only require 5 articles a month and some link posting but there can be a lot involved with that.
Arianna Huffington wrote an article around election time basically stating the internet including BLOGS has put an end to Rovian politics. The access of knowledge to the masses via the internet and blogs has by it's very existence demanded a back-up or validation of any claims made against someone. People like Carl Rove and Lee Atwater were able to make any statements they wanted back in the day about a candidate they were paid to discredit because "we the people" didn't have the resources to search for back-up, the truth or the other side of the story.
Yes. There are some blogs and bloggers out there who are less than polished but the same has always been true for Newspapers and Magazines. You have your "classy" newspapers, your tabloids, and you have your street corner freebies, some of which have with all kinds of unscrupulous Ads and personals woven with ranting, boring juvenile articles.
Anyone who has studied marketing even sporadically since the mid 1980's was most certain to run into the stats that projected the decline of newspaper subscriptions and readership as baby boomers grew into the heads of household, decision making, money making adults in the US. There were some sources in the mid 80's who said nonsense, all middle-aged aged and seniors will always love the paper. Anyone with any vision knew that the overall personality of society would surely change and thus would require new and interactive media sources in addition to umpteen million cable stations.
All this anti-blog speak is predictable, simple minded and humorous. The world is indeed still round and ever changing.
Happy New Year to you all! and.... Happy Blogging!!!!
Mary Kay Gafney
Florida
www.lifeleap.org/blog/

RE: your comment about changes in media ownership, profits, etc.

Linda, about halfway down your blog comment you said, "...the FCC loosened the limits on media ownership. When fewer corporations took control of more media outlets and tried to make them profit machines, they stripped down and homogenized the newspapers, robbing them of the very things that made them unique--investigative reporting, special interest writing, etc...They stopped doing what they did best: to passionately and doggedly search for the truth in order to keep the public informed..."
Another example of why deregulation ain't our friend...
That clarifies somewhat why the MSM has pretty much ignored SP's "wild ride" from Dallas to AK, the oddities in SP's size and shape at various times between February and April 2008, striking weirdnesses in the only 2 "proof" pictures of her "pregnancy", and the practically innumerable misstatements, fudging-facts, and lies SP uttered on the campaign trail and thereafter this fall and winter, even in that CBC interview New Year's Eve.
Before she became a national phenomenon, it seems like from my reading of various archives there was plenty for the AK MSM to deal with, trying to get SP to come clean, meet her obligations and questions-asked head on.
There's even more "plenty" now, but she seems more slippery than a greased pit bull.

People are depending on blogs

because the so called MSM is not doing it's job anymore. They aren't asking tough questions and giving the answers people are looking for. Just like you pointed out. When McCain announced Palin as his running mate, I hit the Google...lol I found you, I found, Andrew, I found Mudflats, but nothing in ADN, nor the other Alaska papers about her. That's when I started reading blogs, and finding answers. It's also when I started finding more about McCain than I ever knew before.
He was such a media darling that there wasn't a lot of stories about him either. Finally Rolling Stone and some of the others started putting out some stories about him. Just as the MSM failed us leading up to the Iraq war, they failed us in this General Election and I think are failing us again with Sarah Palin by not holding her accountable yet again.
Sorry...didn't mean to make another post here....lol But this is something that gets me...just as I can see it does you... And Doogan is another story all over again. I was one of the ones he referred to. I was in that mess of addresses that is now broadcast everywhere. He says he thinks we are lazy because we sent him a duplicate call to action, yet he just CC'd all of us with the same letter, even though some of us didn't send him the same exact letter. So who is the lazy one? And not everyone as he said was hiding. I signed my name...my real name.. yes my email is different sorta...but it is still part of my name.
I think he is just a jerk. Phil Munger has a post on him too. He wouldn't answer him until Phil told Doogan who some blogger was.. lol why I don't know...but that's what he said. Why he thinks he needs to know is beyond me.

with your campaign. My email was in that mess with Doogan. I had 36 emails that day from him and others.
I was going to write him again but as I read the emails I knew it would do no good. He was just one of the legislators I had written, I had sent an email (actually 2 of them ) to all of them, so I was glad to get some kind of reply. I am thinking of writing a letter to the editor of ADN or something and expressing my opinion of Mr Doogan and his replies.
Hope you have a Happy New Year. Thanks for the great reporting this year. You have done well and helped me a lot in learning about your Governor.

A new "Putting Alaska First" newsletter was emailed to state employees today (although I can't find it on the Governor's office page) and this was one of the articles entitled "Successful Education Summit Held in Anchorage":
"Nearly 450 Alaskans from all walks of life gathered for the Alaska Statewide Education Summit ("Building Alaska's Future One Student at a Time"), which concluded Nov. 14 in Anchorage . The summit produced a list of 44 goals with a vision and a mission statement that will form the basis for the first education plan in Alaska 's history.
Participants discussed education issues that affect Alaskans from birth through post-secondary education and the work place, including early childhood needs; the concept of world-class schools and world-class students; the role of technology; the goal of making students simultaneously college-, work- and life-ready; and the challenges surrounding financing, facilities, planning, and student health and safety.
The Department of Education & Early Development will collate the goals produced at the summit, post them on its web site at www.eed.state.ak.us, and call for public comment. The department will convene smaller work groups to flesh out details of the education plan and produce strategies to implement the goals. The department will report annually on its actions to implement the plan."
So nice to know that the Gov put Alaska first by not attending...
I hope Bristol and Levi use the People Magazine money to get the hell out of Wasilla and start a life away from the spotlight, but somehow, I doubt the apple falls far from the tree.
Good luck with the bid on the house!
His plan for the stimulis package to go for infrastructure is right up the alley for her. Also the alternative energy fits the pipeline she wants built.
Since she doesn't know what else to do, it is an answer for her.
