Though many of us suffer from Palin Factor Fatigue, it is irrefutable that there is a nagging curiosity to have the question answered, ?How in the world did Sarah Palin become so popular and why do we still need to hear about her?? My book answers these questions in detail and urges us all to be vigilant. She is one of a small pool of ?rising stars in the republican party? as John McCain stated as recently as January 25, 2009 on Fox News Sunday.

As unbelievable as her meteoric rise was we cannot delude ourselves, turning our backs once again, into thinking that she and those like her are going away. This woman is joined by millions of loyalists whose perception is that she was persecuted in the media, stifled by McCain, and mocked by liberals - and now the theocratic conservatives are regrouping with a vengeance!

About

THE BLOG--HISTORY

"Blue Oasis" began in 2005 in its Blogger format (now an archive) and became possibly the first Alaska Blog on Progressive Politics. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis was honored to represent Alaska as the state blog.

Transition--Community Blog

In September 2008, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis moved to a Soapblox Community Blog format. Readers can become full participants by registering on the blog to comment and write "diaries." Diary titles appear on the right sidebar for folks to read and provide comments. Blog editors may choose to move some of these diaries to the front page.

While this Community was formed specifically with Alaska in mind, all "friends of Alaska" are welcome as members!

**Note about registering** Scroll down the right side until you find the link to register. Then, just follow the instructions!

**Note about comments** To comment on a story, click on the heading and then look for the "comment bar" at the bottom (it's light grey, I can't seem to change it). I believe the font color NOW permits you to see the "post comment" text.

YOUR BLOGMISTRESS

My name is Linda Kellen Biegel and I am a former 15-year Federal employee. Thirteen of those years were spent working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am also semi-retired from the Alaska music scene (singer, sound tech, stage manager, logistics).

When the blog was chosen to represent Alaska in the DNCC State Blogger Pool at the Denver Convention, I attended with the help of Alaska Real blogmistress, Writing Raven and my daughter Morrigan. On August 29th, one day after Barack Obama's inspiring speech at Invesco Field , my life took another turn as it did for all Alaska bloggers when Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's VP running mate. Since then, I've either assisted or have been interviewed by media from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany as well as national media outlets such as Wall Street Journal, NY Times, ABC Good Morning America's Kate Snow, National Journal, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, and NPR.

Presently, I work as a freelance writer, PR, event coordinator, community organizer, wife to computer programmer Josh and mother to 11-year-old Morrigan. Our family especially enjoys our summers in Alaska where we get to subsistence set-net fish Sockeye salmon as well as halibut fish/whalewatch in the family's homemade aluminum boat, "The Neverdone" (when it's working). We reside in Anchorage, Alaska.

Origin of "Celtic Diva"

I've used "Celtic Diva" as a screen name since the early 1990's on Web TV.

"Celtic"

"Folks have asked about my Celtic heritage, especially in light of my name. What they don't realize is that I'm adopted. I was born Valerie Morehead of the Clan Muirhead. I was adopted at three-months-old by the Kellens. I always "knew" I was Celt even before really knew. I was drawn to all things Scottish, especially music. That's why my parents eventually told me at age 16."

"Diva"

"Linda is well-known in Alaska & beyond as the prominent progressive political blogger Celtic Diva of Celtic Diva?s Blue Oasis. But back in the day, the early 1990s, I knew her as Linda Kellen, a member of the local folk/rock band Sky is Blu, which amongst other things performed in at least a couple or so of the annual women?s show Celebration of Change, in which I also performed. And if you don?t already know, let me tell you: Linda is one fine damn singer."

I went on after the break-up of "Sky is Blu" to perform with various Alaska musicians and work with national folks like Bo Diddly, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Taj Mahal, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater, Carny Wilson, etc...

A bit more of "Going Rogue"...the "infamous" photoshop **UPDATED** w/ new page

by: Celtic Diva

Mon Nov 16, 2009 at 08:02:43 AM AKST

Here's the photoshop in question.  Originally it was tagged "Baby Burke" because
it's Eddie Burke's "monstrous" face (taken from the photo underneath it).
Burke even acknowledged it on his radio show.

We're all going to be left hanging, as the portion of the book I have (page 371) in which she starts to reference me is incomplete.  I'm missing 372 and 373 so I won't know the rest of what she says until Tuesday.

**UPDATE** Overnight, my "fairy godfather" sent me the pages (bless him) so I'm no longer "hanging." ****

What information there is on the photoshop incident once again shows a perfect example of this "book of lies" Palin has written:

"Also, unbelievably, hurtful attacks were directed at Trig.  On the Internet, a fake Planned Parenthood ad showed a photo of me holding Trig.  In one corner there was a coat hanger and in the other a slogan, "Better luck next time." What kind of person creates something like that?  Maybe the same kind who would photoshop distorted images over Trig's pretty face in order to make him look monstrous.  The person who did this proudly displayed it on her website; she was also the official Alaskan Blogger for the Democratic National Committee during the 2008 election"

She purposely lied about everything, including the timeline.  Let's set the record straight...

First, the most basic information:  I was the Alaskan Blogger for the Democratic National CONVENTION Committee...DNCC.

Secondly, I was having a web-a-thon to raise money for the emails I wanted from the State, some of which were between Palin and radio host Eddie Burke.  Each night, contributor Dr. Chill was making a "thermometer" to show our progress and to let everyone know how far we had to go.

Day Four was the one with Eddie Burke's face.  It's unfortunate that Palin thinks Eddie Burke has a "monstrous" face but, well, there's not much we can do about that.  Granted, Dr. Chill did have to shrink it and turn it a little sideways to fit it properly in the picture.

Thirdly, folks from the fanatical Palinista  blogs saw an opportunity.  My blog more than some of the other ones focuses strictly on Alaska, which is why my readers knew what we were doing and understood the "Baby Burke" tag I put on the photo.  However, as 99% of their readers knew little or nothing about Alaska other than what they filtered and spoon-fed them, they could spin this any way they wanted.  So, they accused me of the illogical, the unthinkable, something this this disabled mom  never even considered -- they accused me of trying to make fun of Trig. They farmed that information out to the rest of the blogs that were created by McCain Campaign money and influence trying to make it a big story.  It didn't work.

It became a national story the next day when spokesperson Meghan Stapleton did a press release:

Recently we learned of a malicious desecration of a photo of the Governor and baby Trig that has become an iconic representation of a mother's love for a special needs child.

The mere idea of someone doctoring the photo of a special needs baby is appalling. To learn that two Alaskans did it is absolutely sickening. Linda Kellen Biegel, the official Democrat Party blogger for Alaska, should be ashamed of herself and the Democratic National Committee should be ashamed for promoting this website and encouraging this atrocious behavior.

Babies and children are off limits. It is past time to restore decency in politics and real tolerance for all Americans. The Obama Administration sets the moral compass for its party. We ask that special needs children be loved, respected and accepted and that this type of degeneracy be condemned.

What Stapleton and Palin didn't realize is that they, according to Wonkette, "poked a stick in the worlds largest beehive of cheap, tireless insanity and the SomethingAwful.com goons have unleashed a pack of Photoshop Dogs From Hell to make the most incredible collection of Sarah Palin Desecration Images in the History of Time, the end."

It's on page six of the Something Awful thread where you'll find the fake Planned Parenthood ad.

Yes, the fake ad is disgusting, but in many ways Palin had only herself to blame. Many folks saw right through to the motivation behind her press release--partially because she didn't make any sense and partially thanks to great explanatory articles on Huffington Post by AK Muckraker and Shannyn Moore.  These Internet veterans viewed her press release as an attack on free speech...that if you lie about someone's motives, act like a victim and have access to the national media to spread those lies, you can force your target to "sit down and shut up."  If you read the beginning of their photoshop thread, you'll see that their often-gross photoshops were a reaction to just that.

I'm sure we'll see more-and-more come out today, especially in light of the Oprah interview.  I'm not going to write anymore on book pages until I have it tomorrow.  I know that Mudflats is "reading and reporting on the book so you don't have to" and I'll be reporting on the issues in the book that I normally cover--i.e. there are TONS more lies about the ethics complaints.

Stay tuned!

Meltdown (0.00 / 0)
After Palin's FB rant yesterday I think she will have a meltdown before her book tour begins.

We all know that she cannot handle critisizm of ANY kind.

The bloggers in AK drove her squirrelly pointing out her lies and misdeeds.

Now she has mass media scrutinizing this "book" and doing the same.

Since Palin couldn't cope with the bloggers in AK, I predict she will have a complete meltdown in short order.

Palin has truly bitten off more than she can chew this time.

How does one take on the entire media world?

Facts are facts, she cannot deny them and brush the entire media world off as "bloggers in pajamas".

Describing them as "the opposition" is not going to work, because that is simply ridiculous.

For every sentence in her "book", there will be a paragraph describing the lie it portrays.

Palin Looking Forward to Reading Her Book
'Looks Like A Page-turner,' Says Former Guv

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - Amid the publicity blitz for her new book, Going Rogue, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said today that "she was looking forward to reading it, big time."

The book has already been a publishing sensation, rocketing to number one on the New York Times bestseller list for Fiction.

Gov. Palin said that the book caught her interest as she was promoting it on Oprah last week.

"From everything I've said about it, it sure seems to be a page-turner," she said. "As soon as I'm off this book tour I can't wait to sink my teeth into it."

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean echoed Gov. Palin's sentiments: "I am also looking forward to reading my book."

Elsewhere, President Obama suffered a setback today when China rebuffed the United States' offer to sell California.

A heartfelt thanks (0.00 / 0)
I feel the need to once again thank you (and all of the others who have put out the truth about Sarah Palin) for all that you have done.  I know that there probably have been many lonely, trying, scary times while you have tried to just get the facts out there.  But it is appreciated.  Please stay strong...and safe!

When do we start the collection.... (0.00 / 0)
For the first of what will assuredly be many defamation lawsuits against Sarah Palin and her co-author?

[ Parent ]
Oh and Harper Collins (0.00 / 0)
We can't forget to include the publisher in the lawsuit since it's the entity that decided not to fact check this "book."

Linda, might I suggest.... (0.00 / 0)
....that you highlight/link to the page that's described in your sentence that includes this description:

"..It's on page six of the Something Awful thread where you'll find the fake Planned Parenthood ad."

That way, there's "easy access" for the curious to the exact place at SomethingAwful.com -- which is NOT HERE -- and the link coloration highlights the phrase for more visibility.

Reading a bit further, how about another couple of links... (0.00 / 0)
...in your explanatory statement,

"...partially thanks to great explanatory articles on Huffington Post by AK Muckraker and Shannyn Moore."

that lead the reader to those great explanatory articles?

Might as well cover all the bases if you're getting involved in this rebuttal to Palin's prevarications.

My "PhotoShop" Job - What I had in mind. (0.00 / 0)
Linda asked me to do a "thermometer" for her fund raiser.

C4p had been using the Alaskan map for its fund raiser. C4p is not Alaskan, and Linda's blog is; so I thought to use something like it as a to needle them a bit, and show our faster progress.

By day two, the point was made. I also sought to up the game a bit and represent the closeness of Eddie Burke and Sarah Palin; after all that was the purpose of the fund raiser.

After extensive google image searches, I found little in the way of an affectionate embrace with Sarah Palin and anyone. Even If I found Sarah Hugging Todd or her baby, the face of one of them would have been obscured.

I found and used the "Iconic" image of Trig and Sarah with both faces clearly visible.

My first impression of the photo was that it showed warmth and affection; perfect for my purpose.

Personally, I've had good first impressions of Sarah. Its only later when I learn more about her, that my regard for her sours.
Sarah has a way of holding her kid for display purposes, so you can see both faces.

Most "Photoshoppers" will place one face or head on top of another, and thats it.

I cut out Eddies facial features and arranged them on top of the kid, replacing Trig's features entirely. Most of the time was spent blending the skin tones.
I tried to turn Eddie into a baby.

Let me state the obvious. I shrunk Eddie down to baby size, in the loving embrace of Sarah Palin. Big Burly Eddie Burke baby-sized. That was the joke.

If Sarah Had been holding Tripp, the result and intent would have been the same. There was no actual or intentional reference to her baby or his Downs syndrome.
(There are photos of Tripp in the same Blue and Black jumper)

For those who need an explanation, its the face that characterizes identity. Look at your driver's license.

The face, the baby was Eddie Burke. - "Baby Burke".
The joke was Palin's affection and their closeness and nothing else.

I was too late to use it on day 3 so it was used on day 4.
By Day 5 I got a photo from an anonymous Alaskan blogger showing Eddie in his red Tee shirt with racist mis-spelled.

The next thermometer was Palin herself - the rising  thermometer revealing that image of Eddie Burke underneath her.
By day 5 there was quite a bru ha ha about the previous day's image.

The last day was a patriotic triumph of open government- but an expensive one.

Just a note:
When Mansour from c4p introduced the image on Eddie's RADIO show, she spent minutes introducing it, setting it up as an image of Trig, and how I was making fun of the baby- no mention of the caption- "Baby Burke".

Some callers said they hadn't seen it, but based upon her description, they were appalled.

Image- Radio - long setup, out of context -Ignorant outrage
It was pretty funny.

I've done better work, but Palin made sure that BlueOasis got recognition. The Baby Burke image was mentioned in Palin's resignation speech.

I liked my Day 5 thermometer, and the pair of "Gulliver Palin" images better, but, hey, whatever gets the job done.

I want to thank Linda for her work, and providing me a venue for my "Baby Burke" image.
I'm glad to have had a hand in smacking down Palin, and to have my work misrepresented in her book.

Dan Chilton - AKA  Dr Chill

Well said, Dr. Chill! (0.00 / 0)

I created the Palin "Planned Parenthood" photoshop (0.00 / 0)
I am MutantBlue from the Something Awful forums and I created the "Planned Parenthood" image. That and my "Palin Family in Hell" image have been copied and discussed on several conservative blogs (without credit). There have been a lot of angry posts and personal threats by these bloggers and their followers.

I'm not sure how I feel about all of this. I honestly had no editorial or political goal in mind when making those rude photoshops. The original intent and context of the Something Awful thread was simply to mock the faux outrage of the Palin people. There were a lot of pictures posted in that thread, most of them far funnier than mine.

I almost feel bad about the ill will this has stirred up in some conservatives. Almost. The lunacy of the Palinites, birthers, and teabaggers is a real distraction from rational public debate. It's sad that my biggest contribution to the debate seems to be a stupid joke that added fuel to their fire.

If they were smart they would have ignored the offending pictures. That's what grown-ups do when they see dumb jokes on the internet. Instead they got me a Palin shout-out on page 371. Thanks for nothing.

Thank you, Mutant Blue, for coming here (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure that none of those images at "Something Awful" were ever supposed to leave the website, just like my post was meant for Alaska.

Someday we'll compare hate mail.
